Educated Blackrock College and UCD. Qualified in Dentistry in 1975. Worked in general dental practice in the UK for 10 years. On returning to Ireland joined the EHB Dental Service. Gained a Master’s Degree in Public Health (UCD) in 2004. He was a Principal Dental Surgeon from 1996 with a special interest in continuing professional development, oral health promotion and adult treatment schemes. He retired in 2014.
Dr Murphy served as Hon Treasurer and Hon Secretary of the Irish Dental Association and was Irish delegate to the Council of European Dentists for 11 years. Was a professional representative member of the Eastern Regional Health Authority and associated Area Health Boards, 2000-2004, was elected to Dental Council in 2005 and served two full terms as Vice-President from 2005 to 2015 and was a Board member of the Irish Dental Credit Union. Currently is Hon Secretary of the Irish Dental Benevolent Society.
Interests include reading, watching sport, DIY and gardening.
Married to Marianne since 1976; they have three adult children living in Australia and the UK, and two grandchildren.
